Memories
Throughout the novel, Thousand Cranes, both of the parents of Kikuji are deceased. This plays an important role on the character of Kikuji as well as other characters throughout the novel such as Mrs. Ota, Fumiko, and Kurimoto Chikako. Mr. Mitani, Kikuji’s father, has an important impact on the characters in the novel. Each character remembers something about this man, Mr. Mitani, and sometimes forgets that he is gone and just assumes Kikuji is his father. Even though Kikuji’s father is deceased, on many occasions Kikuji’s father is remembered by Kikuji and brought so called back to life.
At the very beginning of the novel, Kikuji receives an invitation from the Kurimoto Chikako for the tea ceremony at the inner cottage of Engakuji. He has not been to a tea ceremony since the death of his father. Whenever he receives these invites for the ceremonies he feels that they are more of a formal gesture rather than a true invite. Kikuji believes that these people are only inviting him because of who his father was, not for Kikuji himself.
