Lily Bart Character Analysis

    Lily Bart is a prime example of an early twentieth century rebel. When analyzed carefully “Lily might be the only real flower in a garden of artificial flowers. In today’s society any woman would feel sorrry for Lily because she is living in a world of no substance.” (McKean 1) Lily’s rebellion I is to oppose conforming to the iner ring of the social elite by not marrying , gambling and befriending am man who is not fully accepted by high society.She ralizes that she has been planted into a “garden” of little substance and self reassurance therfore her motive of rebellion. Lily’s motive behind her rebellion is similar to Etzioni’s idealogy. “What we need now is less how to win friends and influence pepole and more how to restore the sway of moral voices.” Etzioni 518) Society was not a network of friendships but instead a spiderweb hidden emotions and false motives. . As Lily learned more and more about the firvolous lifestyle she was supposed to assimilate into she yearned for acceptance less and less.
