Connections Between Two Films
Connecting essay
In the film Rabbit Proof Fence directed by Phillip Noyce and the two novels The Beach by Alex Garland and Downunder by Bill Bryson, there are many character and theme connections. The characters in each text display a need to travel and develop. The characters Bill, Richard and Molly all are going through different personal development stages in their lives while each coincidently also are embarking on travelling some. All three writers explore the themes of cultural diversity and culture contrasts. In Downunder Bill as an American is compared with Australia and distinguishes the differences, in The Beach we have many various cultures contrasted against each other and finally in Rabbit Proof Fence , Australia’s’ white culture is compared to the Aboriginals.
A common theme in these three texts is the need to travel. In Downunder by Bill Bryson, Bill, the central character is a traveller. Bill is a middle aged man who travels the world for new experience and in the novel he has come to Australia to find it. He is travelling to experience the best life can offer. Bill has no official reasons to find anything or do anything; it is just what he has and wants to do. The same theme was explored in The Beach whe
