Out of the Dust

    The novel Out of the Dust features a young girl by the name of Billie Jo, who lives in the panhandle of Oklahoma during the dust bowl and great depression. This novel is told through the poems of Billie Jo’s diary, she portrays the everyday life of a teenager and the lives of the normal people around her. Through the course of the book we follow Billie Jo through the tragic loss of her mother in an accident partly caused by Billie Jo. Who happens to also burn her hands as a result of trying desperately to save her mother. Billie Jo runs away from home to try to escape her guilt, and seemingly no love from her father. In the process find herself and discovers the real reason for her sadness. And finally changes her outlook on life and her family. Changes happen to every young person, many people however do not document the evolutions they go through as young adults. The story Out of the Dust documents the changes Billie Jo goes through as a young adult. Billie Jo starts off the book as a pensive young woman who lives on a farm with her father and mother during the dust bowl. She works hard at her schoolwork earning good grades and entertaining local people by sharing her gift of playing the piano. Billie Jo feels that her
