The American Dream

    The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a story which through its characters represents the idea of American dream. The American dream in F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel is to obtain wealth, power, fame and glory. Myrtle her husband George, Tom and Daisy and finally Gatsby itself are excellent examples of how people live to obtain their dream. Yet that is a dream which dies for several of the characters and they have no choice but to plunge with the dream. In the novel the best representation of this dreaded dream was the Great Gatsby himself, James Gatz. When he and daisy first met he gave an impression that he can offer her security and anything she wanted. “…he let her believe that he was a person from much the same strata as herself” (Fitzgerald 142). As a consequence Gatsby had to achieve these riches which blinded him of a probable outcome, his self destruction. The green light from daisy’s house from across the bay is a good representation of daisy and the American dream.
