Unfavorable Odds
Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, is a highly complex tragedy. The play is filled with countless instances of tension, anxiety, miscommunication, and confusion all culminating in the catastrophe of the “pair of star crossed lovers.” (Page 7, Shakespeare) However these themes are not the result of one character’s actions. Rather The Nurse, Friar Lawrence, and Mercutio, are all equally culpable of contributing to this tragedy.
The actions of the Nurse, a servant of Juliet’s family the Capulets, , contribute directly to the demise of her lady Juliet and her lover Romeo. There are two instances that have particularly disastrous consequences. For the majority of the play, the Nurse is the only individual, other than Friar Lawrence, cognizant of the affair between Romeo and Juliet. As their messenger , the Nurse not only arranges and sees to the details of the marriage of Romeo and Juliet, but she also, more importantly, initially approves of it: “Good heart, and I’ faith I will tell her as much…Now, God in heaven bless thee!
