First Impressions of Jay Gatsby

    Upon reading the chapters 1 to 3, the first impressions I get of Jay Gatsby come form the feelings of Nick Carraway. The fist mention of his name and small description hold him very high in Nick Carraway’s eyes. “Only Gatsby, the man who gives his name to this book, was exempt from [Nick’s] reaction- Gatsby, who represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn…” This quotation goes on to describe Gatsby as “gorgeous” and “related to intricate machines that register earthquakes.” The next impression I get comes from the description of his mansion: “… a colossal affair by any standard- it was a factual imitation of some Hôtel de Ville in Normandy….” One word describes this- wealthy. His extravagant mansion shows that he is trying to impress and show off with his possessions. Some time passes before we hear of Gatsby again (end of Chap
