Beowulf is the oldest English epic, but it appears not to be about English people. Rather, it is a story about Danes and Geats. The author of Beowulf is unknown. The story was sung for centuries before someone wrote it down. Beowulf is a long, serious narrative poem about aristocratic persons-the kings and heroes of Denmark and Geatland- involved in a series of action, significant in the development of a nation, and unified by the Geatish hero, Beowulf. Beowulf goes through a series of three battles, but in each situation, Beowulf’s motives and actions vary.
Beowulf was a great fighter reputed by many to have the strength of thirty men. As like all noblemen, Beowulf was in search of fame and glory when he got wind of a horrible monster named Grendel. Grendel, being jealous of the partying of merry men in the mead hall next to him, attacked killing thirty of the king’s best men. However, Grendel, being the spawn of Cain, did not stop there. He terrorized the famed mead hall Heorot for over eleven years. Although Beowulf was from Geatland, he traveled to the neighboring nation of Denmark to fight the beast with fourteen of his best men.
