Othello
Allen Blooms article “Cosmopolitan Man and the Political Community: an Interpretation of Othello,” contains many arguable points. Bloom discusses Othello and Desdemona’s “plutonic” love destined for disaster, Iago’s ability to introduce characters to the audience by showing their vices. Bloom also discusses how he feels Iago feeds off of characters problems. His main points are strong, however; Bloom’s supporting details creates an arguable article.
While Othello and Desdemona do share a plutonic love, their love is not this way because of Desdemona’s admiration for Othello, as Bloom feels. Instead, the two’s love is based upon companionship and friendship. Desdemona and Othello both share a love of Othello’s stories. This shared passion creates a relationship that is more friendly than passionate. “It is in their love that the seeds of the ultimate disaster are shown; and it is not an easy union to analyze, this marriage between an old, black, foreign warrior and a young, beautiful, innocent Venetian noblewoman… The suggestions as to the source of the union include lust, profit and the purest admiration for virtue” (Bloom 132).
