Who or What was Responsible for the Death of Santiago Nasar
Chronicle of a Death Foretold – Gabriel GarcÃa Márquez
From reading the first two chapters of this novel it is quite clear to see that there is not merely one or two persons to blame for the killing of Santiago Nasar. I feel there is culpability on the whole town as many people play a part in Santiago Nasar’s death.
The first suggestion that Santiago is going to be killed is the very first sentence of the novel, ‘On the day they were going to kill him…’ The word ‘they’ suggests to us, the readers, that not simply one person will kill him but several. This is a clever technique used so the reader continues reading to find out how and why this event will occur.
There are several motifs leading up to Santiago Nasar’s death building up the tension to make sure the reader reads on to find out what happens, ‘…until he was carved up like a pig…â€
