Racism in
Much controversy has risen lately about the novel Huckleberry Finn, written by Mark Twain. Many people claim that it is “racism” to depict Jim, the slave, as stupid and for Huck, and others to treat him the way they did. Furthermore some people feel that the use of the word “nigger” in the novel is used too much and too loosely. These accusations of Twain being racist are not accurate, and the truth is that Huckleberry Finn was written to be an anti-slavery book by portraying Jim as a father figure, and mocking other white characters.
The Depiction of Jim in the novel is from Huck’s point of view. The first time the reader meets Jim he is given a very negative description of Jim. The reader is told that Jim is illiterate, childlike, not very bright and extremely superstitious. Even though Huck is not racist, he was raised and brought up by racists and much of that has rubbed off on him. As the story progress
