The women of Herland had a unique relationship to their work, one that is extremely different from work relationships in our present day and in the society from which the 3 visitors came. The Herlanders thought of work in terms of the entire Herland community. The women planted trees, fruits and cultivated the land in order to feed the entire community, not just the individuals. The narrator sites an example of this relationship to work and his community. “To them their country was a unit—it was theirs. They themselves were a unit, a conscious group; they thought in terms of the community.” In Herland, the women worked for the good of the whole.
In our present society, some of the working population understands the Herland work theory, but it is not widely practiced. Volunteering in the community is one example of present day Herland work theory. But unfortunately the majority of Americans work for their own prosperity, not for the good of the entire community.
