Mercy's Birds
“Mercy’s Birds”
I have recently just finished reading a book called ‘Mercy’s Birds’ written by Linda Holeman, a Canadian author who lives in Winnipeg. She started writing books in 1990. ‘Mercy’s Birds’ was published in 1998. In this inspiring novel Mercy is the main character, at the start of the book Mercy is 15, she lives with her mum and her Aunt Moo.
In the book Mercy is going through a tough patch in her life. The plot is about her family and the fact that she doesn’t really get on with them. Mercy is basically a ‘loner’ until she meets Andrea who becomes a very close friend. In this essay I am going to describe how family members and friends helped or hindered Mercy.
Pearl is Mercy’s mother but she doesn’t really act like it. Mercy calls her mother Pearl so it is obvious that they don’t really have a close and loving relationship. During the novel it becomes apparent that Pearl is depressed. Pearl loses her job at the start of the story and she doesn’t help around the house. Pearl doesn’t provide any support for Mercy at all so it is obvious that she prevents Mercy from having a good childhood. Mercy is the person in the house that takes in most of the money as Moo only
