Children of the Dust

    ‘Children of the dust’ by Louise Lawrence ‘Children of the dust’ was written by Louise Lawrence and is a fictional novel that is set in present day in Gloucestershire and Avon, two neighbouring cities in England. It explores the possibilities of the after effects of a nuclear war while tracing the survival of one English family. The themes of this novel include survival, prejudice, and the loss of art and culture. As a nuclear war unfolds the horrendous after affects create two extreme worlds of survival, the people of the bunker verses the others left on the outside. Initially the people in the bunk would have seemed much better off, hidden from the radiation and blistering sun as opposed to the people left on the outside, fending for themselves therefore suffering the full effects of a nuclear catastrophe. But in the long run the people on the outside were better off because they had adapted and changed their ways to suit the new and harsh conditions When Gloucestershire and Avon were first faced with these conditions people like Sarah and Veronica, who were left on the outside, had to suffer and soon die so that the strong ones like Catherine could survive the first few stages of the holocaust.
