Left Hand of Darkness

    The world we live in has been, so much a world of possibilities and impossibilities, it is a the world of reality and fantasy and all these aspects are only recognised by their proof of existence. Research and more precisely science fiction, has brought a fair sum of questions and not answers. Indeed one can agree that there is no truth with a capital “T” which tends to be the only truth but rather there is a journey of self-discovery and awareness; a search for the inner truth. This essay serves to examine the novel; Left Hand of Darkness as a novel which challenges “our” normal worldviews. In an attempt to do so, a few themes in the novel will be discussed. LeGuin in her expanded definition of science fiction outlines that one of the essential functions of science is to ask provocative and essential questions, which reverse our habitual way of thinking. This poses a threat of how difficult it is now to accept reality as a given, fixed, and unchangeable entity.
