Motifs in Crime and Punishment

Crime and punishment, a novel written by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, is the story of a young man named Rodion Raskonlikov, who commits a crime by killing a pawn broker named Alyona and her sister Lizaveta. Raskolnikov feels guilty about committing this crime, and although he confesses to the police, he is not fully redeemed and allowed back into society until the end of the novel when he truly confesses to himself. The main theme of the novel is sin and redemption; what one has to do once one has sinned, to be redeemed of that sin and to be allowed back into society. This theme is enhanced by the help of motifs: recurring structures, contrasts, or literary devices that can help to develop and inform the text's major themes. The motifs of blood and suicide help to enhance the theme by bringing attention to different aspects of the theme and by showing how different characters relate to and deal with the theme. The motif of blood appears many times throughout the novel. The first mention of blood in on page 118, during the murders of Alyona and Lizaveta. “ The blood gushed out as from an upturned glass, and her body collapsed backwards.” The next mention of blood is then on page 129 after the murder when Raskolnikov finds blood stain
